Restaurants

Big Fish
55 SW Miami Ave. Road, Miami
305-373-1770

It feels like a Florida Keys seafood shack plunked down in the gritty heart of industrial Miami. The best seats are outside at tables fronting the Miami River or the bar built around a large banyan tree. With cars clattering across a nearby drawbridge, tugboats hauling in ships, MetroRail cars zooming overhead and airplanes blasting through the sky, the place literally reverberates with urban energy. Crab cakes are arguably the best in town.

Cafe Pastis
7310 SW 57 Ave, Miami
305-665-3322

Once inside, you'll be seduced by the cramped, noisy, engagingly funky bistro that calls to mind Paris' wealth of excellent little neighborhood eateries. From the broom-closet-sized kitchen comes the kind of homey, satisfying, no-frills cuisine that never goes out of fashion. There's escargot, fine spinach salad with roasted pears and Roquefort, and the classic steak frites.

Ortanique on the Mile
278 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables
305-446-7710

Ortanique's dining room is a riot of tropical style. Brightly upholstered banquettes on either side of the main dining room are screened off by gauzy curtains. Cuban tile adorns the floor; vivid designs are splashed on the walls and support columns. Chef Cindy Hutson's menu includes curried crab cakes with tangy papaya-lime coulis and swordfish with gratin of boniato and foie gras. Roasted banana cheesecake and Tortuga rum cake are luscious desserts.

Havana Harry's
4612 S. Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables
305-661-2622

A Coral Gables favorite, Havana Harry's is often packed at lunch and dinner with happy patrons enjoying tropical cocktails and everything from palomilla steak and yucca to plantains and grilled dolphin. The atmosphere, warm and friendly, has changed little despite the fact that they've moved out of their old digs and into a newer building next door. Tables are usually hard to come by, but do yourself a favor and wait it out – your taste buds will thank you.

Joe's Stone Crab
11 Washington Ave., Miami Beach
305-673-0365

Though a longtime Miami institution, Joe's appearance and ambience are surprisingly nonconformist--lots of dark wood and gleaming brass, black-and-white tile and plush banquettes. Starters include the chopped salad (a blend of feta, veggies and honey-roasted nuts in a light vinaigrette), groaningly rich creamed spinach or hash browns so good you could rename the place after them. Although there are steaks, poultry and other seafood, the stone crab claws taste cleanly and sweetly of the sea and need only a bit of Joe's famous mustard sauce.

*Stone crab are only in season in month's that end in "R" so they won't be available in May but it's still a great place to eat while you're on the beach!

Monty's Coconut Grove
2550 S. Bayshore Drive, Miami
305-531-9030

Here, patrons leave the pretensions in the parking lot (if there's a spot), but the kids can come. They'll be happy watching the boats sail by from one of the oversized picnic tables. Also a seafood restaurant, Monty's boasts some of the freshest shrimp and stone crabs, which are available at the outdoor raw bar. It's tough not to share with the hovering pelicans that beg unashamedly for marine snacks.

Redfish Grill
9610 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables
305-668-8788

Hidden away at the edge of the saltwater lagoon in lush and tropical Matheson Hammock Park, Red Fish Grill is a decent seafood restaurant, but people don't come here for the food. Judging by the ambience alone, the restaurant deserves four stars. Romantic, hard to find, and truly reminiscent of Old Miami, Red Fish Grill makes up for its lack of flavor with its hard-to-beat, majestic setting.

Lario's on the Beach
820 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach
305-532-9577

Inside, the restaurant turns into a makeshift salsa club, with music blaring over the animated conversations and the sounds of English mixing with Spanish. Because of its locale on Ocean Drive, Lario's is a great place to bring someone who's never experienced the Cuban culture or cuisine.

The classic Cuban dishes get a so-so rating from the Cubans, but a better one from those who aren't as fluent or well-versed in the cuisine. The portions here are larger than life, as are some of the restaurant's patrons who come here for the sidewalk scenery and the deliciously prepared black beans and rice.

Yuca
501 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
305-532-9822

The Yuca kitchen is headed by Executive Chef Ramon Medrano who has been with Yuca when we first opened in 1989. Ramon, who worked as a Sous Chef for the famous Douglas Rodriguez, is responsible for making sure that each diner enjoys the Nuevo Latino Cuisine and overseas the preparation, creativity and passion for all of our items that highlight our Cuban food. Chef Josefa Balbin serves Yuca as our exclusive pastry chef. Chef Josefa has been with Yuca since our inception and is the person most responsible for inventing most of the dishes on our menu. Chef Josefa trained former master chef Douglas Rodriguez, (creator of Nuevo Latino Cuisine) whose cookbook Nuevo Latino owes heavily to Balbin's instruction.

Novecento
121 Alhambra Plaza, Coral Gables, also on Brickell Ave. & Miami Beach
305-532-9822

With two existing properties in Brickell and South Beach and one in Coral Gables on the way, Novecento remains a classic with a reputation for being the go-to meeting point in Miami. The cuisine is a refined co-existence of Argentine, Mediterranean, and Pan Latin fares complemented by an exceptional Argentine wine list. With additional locations in South America, Novecento is the logical choice for local go-to lunches, brunches, happy hour and dinner. Experience our grilled beef tenderloin with sweet potato purée, arugula and radicchio served in a Malbec demi-glace. Or if you're not too hungry, come with colleagues after work and have a glass of wine and “Picaditas” at our new wine bar and private event space, the Malbec Room. To accompany the vibrant fare, we offer a full bar and a captivating ambience that includes a live DJ for entertainment.
